The Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve has earned its fame as one of the most outstanding wildlife sanctuaries in the New World Tropics. Positioned atop the Continental Divide in Western Costa Rica , the Preserve extends down both the Caribbean and Pacific slopes.

The altitude varies from about 600 meters in the lower reaches of the Peñas Blancas River, to 1842 meters at the top of Cerro Tres Amigos.

The Preserve supports six different vegetational communities. There are over 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, 120 species of amphibians and reptiles, and 2,500 species of plants, as well as tens of thousands of insect species. Spectacular wildlife includes the Jaguar, Ocelot, Baird’s Tapir, Three-wattled Bellbird, Barenecked Umbrellabird and Resplandent Quetzal.

Tourism facilities:

Eight distinct trails within the Cloud Forest, with a total extension of 13 km.

A suspended bridge with a 100 meter span, and a maximum height of 25 meters over the ground, that allow you to view numerous epiphytes.

Three shelters within the reserve, each with space for a minimum of ten persons, and equipped with bunk beds, a gaz stove, cooking ustensiles and potable water.

Guided natural history tours with qualified nature quides, each tours begin at 7.30 a.m. every morning and last between 2.5 and 3 hours.

Guided nocturnal tours, each lasting about 2 hours.
